Pathways Home Health & Hospice has scheduled its 25th annual “One From the Heart” Awards Breakfast fundraiser 7:30-9:30 a.m. Oct. 29 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 4290 El Camino Real, Palo Alto.

The event, which raises funds for health care services and honors leaders in health care and philanthropy, attracts nearly 650 supporters and has generated more than $5 million since its inception.

This year’s featured speaker is radio broadcaster Michael Krasny, host of KQED’s Forum. Early in his career, Krasny produced some of the first programs about hospice care in the Bay Area and has continued to promote public dialogue on the topic. Rita Williams, retired KTVU Channel 2 News reporter and recipient of multiple Emmy, Peabody and Murrow awards, will serve as master of ceremonies.

At the “One From the Heart” event, Pathways honors local residents who have made significant contributions to health care. Los Altos resident Richard Slavin, M.D., former CEO of the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, will receive this year’s Leadership in Healthcare Award. Slavin and his wife, Sally, are longtime Pathways supporters.

“Dr. Slavin has unfailingly supported Pathways’ mission to provide compassionate family-centered hospice and home health care,” said Barbara Burgess, Pathways CEO. “Pathways is fortunate to have had Dr. Slavin as a mentor and friend. Like Pathways, Dr. Slavin always puts the patient first. Patient-centered care is the keystone of the long partnership between Pathways and PAMF.”

Slavin oversaw the addition of palliative care and advanced illness management programs at PAMF.

“It is an honor to be recognized by Pathways,” Slavin said. “This terrific organization provides such special care for the PAMF patients in the community.”

Sally Slavin was among the early members of the One From the Heart Committee, according to Sandra Coolidge, Pathways president of philanthropy.

“We are grateful to the Slavin family for all they have done to assure that Pathways hospice, home health and palliative care patients receive compassionate, state-of-the-art care,” Coolidge said.

Pathways Foundation Board Chairman Mark Kelsey, senior vice president of Pacific Midwest Regional Banking at Wells Fargo, will receive the Leadership in Healthcare Philanthropy Award. Kelsey and his wife, Kathy, became involved with Pathways after assisting a neighbor who received hospice care.

“We continue to be amazed by the outpouring of support from local businesses, the medical community and the people we serve,” said Pathways CEO Barbara Burgess. “Their generosity has enabled us to provide an exceptional level of care to those in need of health care at home.”

Burgess said the silver anniversary of the breakfast provides an opportunity for the community to find out more about “who we are, hear an outstanding speaker, support critical services and enjoy a great social event.”
