Foothill College classes and campus operations returned to normal Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 11) once officials deemed a suspicious item safe.

A concerned witness called the Foothill-De Anza Police Department at approximately 11:15 a.m. to report a suspicious object within an exterior restroom attached to the administration building, said Lori Thomas, college spokeswoman. The building, No. 1900, is located at the center of campus.

Thomas did not know what sort of item was involved in the incident and could not comment about the subsequent investigation into its source.

Campus police officers requested the assistance of county law enforcement, and the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad arrived by approximately 12:30 p.m., Thomas said. Santa Clara County Fire Department officials were also on scene.

Officials evacuated the 50 or so employees who work within the college administration building, but they deemed the scene clear of hazardous materials by 1:57 p.m., Thomas said.
