The latest survey to gauge public opinion on whether to implement a cap on new-residence square footage in Los Altos Hills shows a mostly split sentiment, although the tight vote flip-flopped. According to the poll, 51 percent of Hills residents don’t think there should be a cap, up from 42 percent in 2007. 42 percent supported the idea in 2011, down from 51 percent four years ago. 6 percent said they didn’t know.

Officials said they wouldn’t discuss a development cap as opinion wasn’t overwhelmingly one way or another.

Currently, residents can build within a 1 acre:6,000 square feet ratio. A five acre lot permits 30,000 square feet of home.
