Cupertino parcel tax passes convincingly

The Cupertino Union School District, which includes a portion of south Los Altos, passed its $125 parcel tax last week.

Final numbers indicate that 70.06 percent (20,122 voters) voted yes, while 29.94 percent (8,598) opposed Measure C.

The six-year parcel tax will generate $4.4 million annually for the district.

The Cupertino Union School District includes two schools that serve Los Altos students: Montclaire Elementary School in Los Altos and Cupertino Middle School.

Stedler resigns

Anne Stedler, economic development manager for the city of Los Altos, resigned April 29 due to personal reasons.

According to Assistant City Manager James Walgren, Stedler faced an “untenable situation” with her elderly father in Austin, Texas, and another senior she cared for in Nevada.

Stedler joined the city staff in November 2008 and collaborated with councilmembers, merchants and residents to strengthen and revitalize downtown’s businesses, attract more customers and add additional parking spaces without diminishing the village character of the area.

“(Stedler) was a wonderful addition to city staff,” Walgren said. “She made great strides in the city’s economic development.”

City officials hope to begin looking for Stedler’s replacement after the budget process is completed in June, Walgren said.

Driver sustains injuries after SUV flip

Emergency responders transported a 52-year-old Los Altos woman to the hospital with minor injuries approximately 9 p.m. Thursday after her SUV flipped over on Fremont Road in Los Altos Hills, a sheriff’s spokesman said.

Lt. Don Morrissey with the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office said “it appears the driver avoided an animal” – likely a deer – “and possibly overcorrected and hit an embankment” near Seven Acres Lane.

The driver was alone in the car, according to Morrissey, and was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He did not divulge details of her injuries.

The department will conduct an investigation in coming weeks, Morrissey said.
