The Mountain View Police Department plans to support safe driving education and enforcement programs with a $102,000 traffic safety grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The grant will provide programs to curb high-visibility distracted driving; crash-causing violations including red-light and stop-sign violations, speeding, failure to yield and inappropriate lane changes and turns; and driving habits that put pedestrians and bicyclists at risk. Officers will receive certifications, recertifications and trainings related to driving under the influence, including the Standard Field Sobriety Test, Drug Recognition Expert and Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement.

“This funding will strengthen our commitment to public safety in our community,” said Sgt. Chris Goff in a department press release.

The programs the grant underwrites will be available to officers through next September.
