The Mountain View Police Department seeks the public’s assistance in identifying a man who attacked a woman on the Stevens Creek Trail Monday (Feb. 25) evening and caused serious injuries to her face.

Witnesses described the assailant as a black man between the ages of 20 and 30, according to a Mountain View Police Department press release. He is approximately 6 feet tall and has a slender to medium build. At the time of Monday’s assault, he had short hair and wore a gray Golden State Warriors sweatshirt. He may speak with a Caribbean accent. His first name may be “Jerry,” which is how he introduced himself to the victim. He may have bite marks on his hands or forearms.

The assailant approached the victim, a woman visiting from Massachusetts, just before 10 p.m. as she walked on the Stevens Creek Trail near the bridge to Creekside Park at the intersection of Gladys Avenue and Easy Street, according to the release. When she refused to engage with him, he pushed her into the bushes several feet off the trail and proceeded to repeatedly punch her in the face.

A pair of passersby helped foil the attack, according to the press release. Upon encountering the scene, they yelled at the assailant, and the victim bit him as he tried to muffle her screams. She managed to free herself and join the pair as the assailant fled the scene, traveling southbound on the trail under Highway 85. An extensive search involving multiple police officers and a K-9 tracker failed to uncover his whereabouts.
