The Los Altos Police Department has scheduled a Public Safety Open House 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Los Altos Civic Center, in the parking lot between the police station and city hall, 97 Hillview Ave.

The event provides residents the opportunity to meet members of the police department.

The festivities will include tours of the police station; a display of emergency vehicles, both current and vintage; a showcase of specific department units; refreshments; a bike rodeo, a “kids’ zone” with activities; a Santa Clara County mobile book library; face painting; crafts; and doughnut decorating.

The inaugural event is the brainchild of new Los Altos Police Chief Angela Averiett.

“Many people have never had any sort of interaction with their local law enforcement and only know about police based on TV shows or media coverage,” Averiett said. “An open house gives people a chance to meet and mingle with their local police to get a better understanding of what we do. But it is also a great way to actively engage with the community we serve, because law enforcement is the community.”

Police will be joined by members of the Santa Clara County Fire Department, Palo Alto Animal Control and Pets In Need, as well as community emergency preparedness groups.

Admission is free and open to all, including attendees with dogs.

No registration is required.

Limited parking is available at the community center.
