The Los Altos Hills City Council is scheduled 7 p.m. Thursday to discuss the results of an e-mail survey that gauges whether residents want a square-foot limit on new residential developments.

Approximately 700 residents received the survey last week, according to Councilman John Radford. Polling closed April 15.

Currently, Los Altos Hills permits 6,000 square feet of house for every 1 acre. If the survey reflects an overwhelming support of a cap, officials may begin talks on how to implement one. Some neighboring cities, including Woodside and Portola Valley, implement absolute limits of 8,000 and 10,121 square feet, respectively.

It’s not the first time Los Altos Hills has considered a cap.

In 2007, 42 percent of respondents to a similar survey said a limit wasn’t necessary while 35 percent said officials should implement a 10,000- to 15,000-square-foot cap. Councilman Jean Mordo said the survey is necessary to determine how residents feel about the issue four years later. Los Altos Hills Town Hall is located at 26379 West Fremont Road.
