Last week, the Los Altos History Museum announced its new exhibition in partnership with the city of Los Altos titled “Our Community Prepares.” Set to open three days after the 30th anniversary of the Loma Prieta Earthquake (Oct. 17, 1989), the exhibition will feature historic photographs from the aftermath of the significant natural disaster as well as teach attendees how to prepare for future quakes.

Two earthquakes with magnitudes above 4.0 hit the Bay Area this week. According to the United States Geological Survey, a 4.5-magnitude earthquake with an epicenter of Pleasant Hill (East Bay Area) struck at 10:33 p.m. Monday evening (Oct. 14). Several Los Altos residents visited the Town Crier’s Facebook page to report that they felt the quake.

“I guess my dog won’t be in any earthquake early detection studies… slept right through it,” joked one reader.

Tuesday afternoon at 12:42 p.m., an earthquake with a 4.7 magnitude was recorded in Tres Pinos, approximately 15 miles from Hollister.

After the first earthquake, the city of Los Altos used the circumstance to promote the museum exhibit.

“You may not have felt the earthquake this morning but you can still come to the opening… this Sunday, this exhibit will cover natural disasters and how you can prepare for them!” a city staff member wrote.
