Law enforcement officials instructed Mountain View High to shelter in place Wednesday (Jan. 25) as they searched for armed burglary suspects in the vicinity.

Police eventually apprehended and arrested three suspects, and no injuries were reported. Classes resumed after a short delay and school ended approximately 30 minutes later.

“There were concerns because they did not find the suspects initially and they were close enough to the school,” said David Grissom, the school’s principal.

The incident began about noon when residents called the Los Altos Police Department to report a suspicious vehicle and individuals entering backyards near the intersection of Newcastle Drive and Holt Avenue, wrote Police Executive Assistant Alyssa Green in a Nextdoor post. A residential burglary was subsequently reported in the area.

“Shortly thereafter, officers observed two individuals matching the description of the outstanding suspects running into a backyard on Fallen Leaf Lane near Clay Drive,” Green wrote. “Mountain View and Los Altos police set up a perimeter and began searching the area. Officers successfully located the two suspects and took them into custody. The person in the vehicle was found to be in possession of a loaded firearm and was also taken into custody.”

Police have not yet identified the suspects.

Los Altos Police Chief Andy Galea said approximately 20 Los Altos and Mountain View police officers responded to the scene. He thanked the Mountain View Police Department for its assistance and credited alert residents for theirs.

“It’s nice when everything goes well,” Galea said. “It doesn’t always turn out that way.”
