Harding, chosen by the district’s board of trustees to replace the retiring Barry Groves, is the superintendent of the Healdsburg Unified School District in Sonoma County.

“His experience and credentials are exactly what we need in MVLA as we move our district forward in partnership with our community to expand opportunities for our students,” said Susan Sweeley, board president. “Dr. Harding’s extensive experience in instructional leadership, community involvement, and strong partnerships with employees will be a tremendous asset in providing leadership as the district continues its focus on success for all students.”

Following a site visit, the board anticipates appointing Harding as superintendent at its next meeting, scheduled May 11, according to the release. He would begin work July 1.

The board made its decision with input gathered from all key stakeholder groups in the district regarding the qualities desired of the next superintendent, the release stated.

Harding began his career in environmental education – first as a teacher, then as program director. He later taught mathematics and economics at the high school and adult school level. As assistant principal at Sir Francis Drake High School in Marin County, Harding helped launched its integrated studies program. He was later selected as founding principal of Windsor High School and was promoted to assistant superintendent for the Windsor Unified School District. He has been superintendent in Healdsburg since June 2008.

Harding is an honors graduate from UC Berkeley, where he was a Sherman-Fairchild Scholar. He earned a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from Sonoma State University and was inducted into the Sonoma State Circle of Excellence in 2002. Harding completed his dissertation on the development of positive school culture and was awarded his doctorate in 2007.

Harding is married and has four sons, ages 21-27, and resides in Healdsburg.
