An invitation to drive less

“Think globally. Bike locally.” That’s the motto GreenTown Los Altos wants the community to employ as members of the grassroots environmental organization gathered noon Wednesday in Lincoln Park to launch the Drive Less Challenge.

The two-week regional effort to encourage people to get out of their cars and use alternative transportation runs from Friday – Earth Day – through May 5.

Bike, walk, carpool, rollerblade or bus, GreenTown Executive Director Margie Suozzo wants everyone to know it’s not too late to sign up to lower greenhouse gases and win prizes donated by local merchants.

“This year, we’re making a very concerted effort to engage everyone,” she said, “even if it’s a bribe for two weeks.” Prizes will be awarded for the greatest number of green trips, the most improved and the greenest commute, Suozzo said.

Local schools, clubs and other organizations can sign up to compete against each other, too. For more information or to register, visit www.drivelesschallenge.com.
