The Palo Alto Humane Society and the Mountain View Police Department have joined forces in an effort to identify the person who cruelly shot a cat in Mountain View sometime during the first week of May. The Palo Alto Humane Society is offering a $500 reward to anyone who can provide information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect.

The Mountain View Police Department believes the shooting, which likely took place somewhere near College Ave., occurred in the first week of May. The cat, who is believed to be two or three years old, was shot three times with a small caliber handgun and was found days later on May 7, 2010, by a community member who immediately reported the crime. The cat suffered serious injuries to both her leg and abdomen. The Palo Alto Humane Society paid for life-saving surgery, but one leg had to be amputated in order to save the cat. She is recovering and is learning to walk on three legs. The Palo Alto Humane Society is accepting donations to assist with the payment of the surgery and recuperation and is also looking for a loving home for the cat. Interested donors or adopters should call 650-424-1901.

Mountain View detectives are actively investigating the shooting, which constitutes felony animal abuse and can carry a prison sentence plus fines. The MVPD is asking anyone with any information about this crime to contact them at 650-903-6344. Callers may remain anonymous when providing information, but need to fully identify themselves in order to be eligible for the Humane Society reward.
