Los Altos Mayor Jan Pepper added her name to an April 29 letter addressed to Santa Clara County officials urging “accelerated action” to ramp up COVID-19 testing, a critical prerequisite for economic reopening.

Pepper signed on to the letter along with the mayors of 15 other South Bay cities ranging from Palo Alto to San Jose, including Michelle Wu of Los Altos Hills and Margaret Abe-Koga of Mountain View.

While expressing gratitude to the Board of Supervisors, county executive Jeff Smith, county counsel James Williams and public health officer Dr. Sara Cody, the mayors sought clear goals for testing frequency to safely reopen schools and most businesses. They also requested a list of testing sites available to the public, offering city resources to help in such efforts as contact tracing activities.

“We encourage you to consider forming a Santa Clara County Covid-19 Testing Task Force,” the mayors’ letter said. “Without dramatic scaling of testing from the current levels of approximately 600 tests per day to several thousand tests per day, we cannot reopen our county.”
