A man hit by a car while attempting to cross U.S. Highway 101 in Mountain View on foot Sunday evening (March 24) has been identified as Trevor Tangerose, according to the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Just after 7 p.m., James Field, 22, of Hayward was traveling northbound on the freeway at the approximate speed limit when Tangerose began to cross from the east shoulder of Highway 101 near Rengstorff Avenue in a westerly direction, according to CHP officials. Tangerose entered the fast lane, where Field’s white 2001 Subaru hit him.
CHP officials originally referred to Tangerose, 21, as “a man in his 20s carrying no identification.” The Medical Examiner’s Office did not confirm whether Tangerose was a transient, a possibility cued by speculation of suitcases and clothing on the off-ramp near where he was hit, but stated he had no listed city of residency.
The CHP’s Traffic Incident Page for the Golden Gate area revealed that a witness on scene noticed Tangerose’s alleged belongings and told the CHP that the person believed the property “belonged to the man who was hit on the freeway.” The witness was not from the area, the incident page reported, but advised the belongings were there when CHP diverted traffic.
It is unknown at this time why Tangerose attempted to cross the freeway, according to CHP Officer Art Montiel. Tangerose was transported to Stanford Hospital in an ambulance, where he succumbed to his injuries, the CHP said the day following the incident.
CHP is investigating the incident, but they do not believe at this time that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision. No arrests were made.
Witnesses to the collision are asked to call Officer Matt Balvin at 369-6261.
