A man in his 20s carrying no identification died at a nearby hospital after being hit by car on U.S. Highway 101 in Mountain View when attempting to cross the freeway on foot, according to CHP officials.

Just after 7 p.m. Sunday evening, the driver, James Field, 22, of Hayward was traveling northbound in his white 2001 Subaru at approximately 65 mph when a white adult man began crossing from the east shoulder in a westerly direction. Driving in the the fast lane, Field hit the man just north of Rengstorff Avenue when the man walked directly into the path of his vehicle.

CHP Officer Art Montiel told the Town Crier Monday there was speculation the pedestrian hit was homeless due to his lack of ID.

The CHP’s Traffic Incident Page for the Golden Gate area revealed that a witness on the scene noted there were “suitcases and clothing on the off-ramp where CHP was diverting traffic.” The witness said the property could belong to the man “who was hit on the freeway.” The witness was not from the area, the incident page reported, but advised the belongings were on the Rengstorff Avenue off-ramp from northbound 101.

The victim was transported to Stanford Hospital in an ambulance, where he subsequently succumbed to his injuries, a press release from the CHP stated. CHP officials do not believe alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision, which is currently under investigation. No arrests were made.

In the aftermath of the incident, the roadway was closed to northbound travelers for approximately 35 minutes.

Witnesses to the collision are urged to call call Officer Matt Balvin at 369-6261.
