“This little animal is really cute,” said art critic and consultant Carol Dabb, describing one of the paintings on display in downtown Los Altos. “Even though it is stylized and we don’t really know what kind of animal it is, the artist has given the little critter a personality,” Dabb said. “The round coal-black eyes have life in them, even though they are just simple circles.”

Such is a sample of the Kids Art on Main Street collection of 30 paintings on display at Main Street Cafe & Books through Saturday. The artwork was produced in the sequential arts education program for elementary school children sponsored by the Community School of Music and Arts.

Students from Springer and St. Nicholas elementary schools created the displayed art. Artists from Springer are third-graders Ryan Kohn, Sophie Natan and Connor Rudolph; fourth-grader Natasha Samari; and fifth-graders Adrianna Amsden, Erik Posey and Tyler Stout.

The artists from St. Nicholas are kindergartners John Boetius, Diego Ibarra, Shelby Rathert, Garod Drumm and Angela Smith; first-graders Liam McCarthy and Jacob Rogers; second-graders Emily Murphy and Samantha Rhoads; third-graders Michael Halamek and Susan Lang; fourth-graders Jimmy Frazier and Erin Sheridan; fifth-graders Kriszten Kocmond, Matthew Mort, Katrina Officer, Rachel Plasterer and Connor Thompson; and sixth-graders Zachary Garcia, Olivia Quaglia, Thomas Stelling, Mia Waldern and Ciara Wells.

Dabb will award a “best of show” to a selected painting plus a blue ribbon to a winner in each category. Winners will be announced at a root beer float reception, 5-6:30 p.m., Aug. 11, at Main Street Cafe & Books. Children 13 and under will receive free root beer floats. The event and prizes are sponsored by the Los Altos Cultural Association.

Main Street Cafe & Books is located at 134 Main St., Los Altos.
