Stem cell debate topic of forum

Stanford University professors Dr. Paul Berg, a Nobel Laureate in biochemistry and, Henry T. (Hank) Greely, a professor of law, explore the promise and challenges of stem cell research at a free public forum scheduled for 7-9 p.m., Aug. 10, at the Parish Hall of the Foothills Congregational Church, 461 Orange Ave., Los Altos.

Californians will vote on the future of stem cell research in the Nov. 2 election. Proposition 71, if it passes, will establish the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine to regulate and fund stem cell research in the state.

Proponents of the ballot initiative cite the promise of potential cures for debilitating conditions ranging from Alzheimer’s to spinal cord injuries. Opponents point to fiscal, bureaucratic, scientific, and moral and ethical problems.

Forum co-sponsors are the League of Women Voters of Los Altos/Mountain View and Foothills Congregational Church.
