As the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks approaches, the choral community, lead by Schola Cantorum in partnership with the Office of Religious Education at Stanford University, has scheduled a musical tribute 1:30 p.m. Sept. 11 in Stanford Memorial Church, 450 Serra Mall on the campus.

The 80-person Schola Cantorum chorus will join singers from choirs across the Bay Area to pay homage to those who lost their lives as well as those who administered aid during the national tragedy.

Local celebrated soloists, including soprano Christine Abraham, alto Malin Fritz Walrod, tenor Victor Floyd and baritone Jeffrey Fields, will donate their services. An orchestra with Robert Huw Morgan at the organ will accompany the musicians.

The singers and orchestra will perform under the baton of Schola Cantorum’s conductor and music director, Gregory Wait, senior lecturer and director of vocal studies at Stanford. Attendees are invited to join in the singing of Mozart’s Requiem.

“We who have made our life’s work the choral art know the power and impact of joining in community to sing with one voice,” Wait said. “This event will be a fitting way to pay tribute for all of us who participate – whether as performers on the dais or as members of the audience seated in the congregation.”

The Rev. Scotty McLennan, dean for Religious Life at Stanford and chaplain of Stanford Memorial Church, will preside over the service, which will include the dean’s reflections and lighting of candles.

Admission is free and open to the public.
