Los Altos Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is scheduled to host local author Tempe Javitz on noon Friday, Nov. 15 in the Sequoia Room of the Los Altos Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave.

Community members are invited to hear her talk, “Uncovering a Legacy:  Jessamine Spear Johnson, an Early Western Photographer in Montana and Wyoming.” The event is free.

Jessamine Spear Johnson (1886-1978) took up photography in the 1920s while living on a ranch in Montana with her cowboy husband and seven children. Her photos documented ranch life and the rural west from the 1920s through the early 1950s.

Javitz writes about Johnson: “Out among the Hereford cattle, the picturesque cowboys, and the fantastical Cheyenne and Crow tribes she found her proper avocation in capturing the evolving west. … Jessamine Spear Johnson photographed bucking broncos, stark snowy landscapes budding prairie flowers, her Crow and Cheyenne neighbors, roundups and rodeos.”
