Ranch Gas Station has great employees

I would like to commend the guys at the Ranch Gas Station on Fremont Rd. in Los Altos.

Not only have they provided excellent maintenance and repairs for my cars over the years but they have been reliable, prompt and their service is fairly priced. They have also been helpful in little things like assisting me with putting air in my car’s tires or dealing with an occasionally ornery gas pump computer, always friendly. I cannot recommend them highly enough.

Yes to carbon removal

Mr. Leonard said in a letter to the Town Crier editor that the Nov. 3 evacuation of downtown Los Altos brought to mind a related concern about sequestration of carbon dioxide.  His letter brought several things to mind for me.

First, we Los Altans dodged a bullet.  Thanks to quick work by brave first responders we avoided a disaster such as the tragic San Bruno pipeline explosion in 2010 that killed eight people and leveled dozens of homes.

Second, the title of his letter – “Say no to CO2 sequestration” – warrants a response.  The reason our state Senator Josh Becker gave a talk in the first-ever Carbon Removal pavilion at COP30 in Brazil last week is that in addition to

reducing emissions, we must also clean up the big carbon mess we’ve made. To restore the climate we must remove roughly a trillion tons of legacy CO2.

The primary concern raised by Mr. Leonard is pumping CO2 into depleted oil and gas fields. The fossil fuel industry has been doing this for decades, and I share his concerns about this particular method of storing CO2.

The good news is that there are many proven carbon removal methods that do not involve pumping CO2 underground.  A favorite of mine is biochar.  It can be produced via a carbon-negative, energy-positive, pyrolysis process.  Many California farmers and winegrowers are applying biochar to their soil because it increases their crop yields and improves soil quality over time.  The fact that this also results in pulling CO2 out of the atmosphere is a huge side benefit for all of humanity.
