Will plums become part of the past?

Thanks for giving a shout-out to the plum blossoms along San Antonio Road. And likewise, for acknowledging both Phoebe Bressack, a former planning commissioner, and Doug Schmitz, former city manager of Los Altos, who BOTH had a deep sense of commitment to the residents and the town.

Unfortunately, many, if not most, of the plum trees will be a thing of the past if the city’s plans for San Antonio Road are put into effect. For those who prefer beauty, there is still time to write the city council to have them reconsider the widening of the street and loss of those trees. As Joni Mitchell says, “You don’t know what you got til it’s gone.”

Liccardo: Step up on climate change

I am writing as a resident of Mountain View. I’m calling on Congressional representative Sam Liccardo to do more to prioritize our health, climate and future. This includes:

• Stopping efforts to repeal the Inflation Reduction Act’s climate and clean energy policies that will put us on a path to cut climate pollution 40 percent by 2030, create 9 million jobs and lower energy prices.

• Blocking the Trump administration from cutting vital government programs and staff to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy.

• Resisting attempts to gut our environmental protection laws that protect our health and environment.

Climate change is exacerbating disasters like fires, flooding and drought.

I urge Representative Liccardo to protect people in our community over corporate polluters. We need you to fight for us!

Don’t overlook Ramadan

For a few years every 33 years, Passover, Lent and Ramadan happen about same time of the year.

Rev. David Moore, hopefully unintentionally, overlooked Ramadan.

The lunar month fast from dawn to sunset may well be more onerous than Lent. One indeed prays, feeds the poor, and does not eat or drink anything from about 5:30 a.m. to 6:10 p.m.

The prayers during Ramadan start about an hour after the usual late evening prayer and often goes on to 10:30-11 p.m.

(Moore) might benefit from attending a sermon/service during the month (this year, March 1-30; being a truly lunar calendar, it shifts – 11 days earlier every year).
