Atmospheric river damages minimal in Los Altos and Mountain View

The cities of Mountain View and Los Altos both fared well last week and over the weekend despite an atmospheric river that was poised to bring rain and strong wind.

The storm, which brought a wind advisory for most of the Bay Area Thursday morning, was projected to bring between a quarter and a half inch of rain and southeast winds reaching 15 to 21 mph and gusts up to 38 mph, according to the National Weather Service. Thursday received the most serious weather from the storm, with rain tapering off Monday.

Lenka Wright, Mountain View’s chief communications officer, told the Town Crier that “there were no significant storm-related impacts in Mountain View.”

Areas of Los Altos experienced puddling, but no flooding, Los Altos City Manager Gabriel Engeland said. There was one report of a downed tree on private property, he said, and it required city crew response to clear the roadway.

As with previous atmospheric rivers, residents stocked up on supplies.

Nina Nesmith, operations manager at Los Altos Hardware, said customers sought out tarps, flood barriers and sand bags in anticipation of the coming storm. She told the Town Crier previously that preparing early was crucial.

“People always realize that they need things after the storm,” she said.
