Phone scammers impersonate MVPD personnel and request personal information, money

The Mountain View Police Department is encouraging care when receiving calls from MVPD after learning scammers are spoofing the department’s non-emergency line.

Scammers are specifically asking for sensitive, personal information and asking for money, according to an MVPD Facebook page post shared last week.

“Please know, the police department does not proactively call members of the community asking for money or personnel information,” the post read. “Also, we will never ask for you to use cryptocurrency, gift cards, wire transfers or cash to do things like pay a fine or remove a warrant.”

Officers encourage those  who are unsure about the legitimacy of a call, or those who have been requested to make some sort of payment, to immediately hang up and call the records line, 650-904-6344, to ensure a call is legitimate.
