Los Altos Police Chief Angela Averiett has announced her resignation after a year and a half on the job. Averiett is leaving for an interim police chief position in San Leandro. She is set to assume her new responsibilities at the end of April.

During her tenure, Averiett has initiated the first Public Safety Open House, introduced and implemented a new automated license plate reader (ALPR) program and policy, and significantly increased the officer recruitment rate. The department has also seen an overall boost in department morale, said Los Altos City Manager Gabriel Engeland.

“Chief Angela Averiett accomplished much of what she set out to do in Los Altos, including modernizing many of our police services and focusing on community-oriented policing,” Engeland said in a press release issued Thursday (Feb. 22). “We will move forward quickly with our search for the next police chief so we can capture the positive momentum in the police department and build on her great work. I join the Mayor, City Council, and Los Altos community in wishing Chief Averiett well in her new position and thanking her for her exemplary service to our community.”
