California Water Service Co. recently completed a main replacement project in Los Altos aimed at strengthening water system reliability and infrastructure resiliency and enhancing fire protection in the area.
The project, which began in October and wrapped up just before the new year, included the installation of approximately 2,200 feet of new 6-inch water main on Casita Way, from Alvarado Avenue to the end of Casita, in north Los Altos. The new pipes are made of PVC, which generally lasts longer than other materials and does not corrode. The durability of the new pipes also means customers will see benefits from the infrastructure upgrade both now and for decades to come, according to Cal Water officials.
Crews also installed four additional fire hydrants to ensure firefighters have the resources they need to protect the community. The utility has completed water quality testing and restored affected streets, sod and landscaping.
“This infrastructure upgrade was an important step in ensuring we can continue to reliably deliver safe, high-quality water every day to our Los Altos residents, and that firefighters have the water they need during an emergency,” said District Manager Ron Richardson in a Jan. 8 press release. “These improvements are just one example of our promise to provide quality, service and value to our customers and communities.”
Cal Water serves approximately 70,000 people through 18,900 service connections in the Los Altos area and an estimated 2 million people through 484,900 service connections in California. The utility has provided water service in the area since 1931.
