Sheriff’s deputies arrested a man who stole a car from unincorporated Los Altos, took it for a joyride and crashed it in downtown San Jose just after 5 a.m. Tuesday (Sept. 4) morning, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.

At approximately 5:10 a.m., Westside Patrol deputies responded to a Los Altos residence after receiving a report of a residential burglary. In addition to allegedly stealing items from inside the home, Eric Vargas-Bonilla, 20, stole a 2017 silver Tesla Model X.

Santa Clara County deputies located the car traveling southbound on Interstate 280 and gave chase to Vargas-Bonilla. The pursuit ended in a collision at Delmas Avenue and West Santa Clara Street, according to Sgt. Richard Glennon.

After Vargas-Bonilla lost control of the Tesla and struck a pole, disabling the vehicle just outside the SAP Center, he fled the scene on foot. Deputies set up a perimeter and called for K-9s to assist in the search for the suspect, who was then considered at large.

Approximately an hour after the original call in Los Altos, deputies and assisting officers found Vargas-Bonilla and took him into custody.

The investigation is ongoing, Glennon said.
