Approximately 35 first responders from the Santa Clara County Fire Department, CalFire and the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District fought the blaze, located on a slope off the Hammond-Snyder Loop Trail near the Whispering Creek Equestrian Center. Smoke from the fire could be seen from Interstate 280.

Residents of California Oak Way in Cupertino reported the fire at 10:25 a.m., and firefighters were able to stop the flames’ forward progress by 10:58 a.m., said Stephanie Stuehler, Santa Clara County Fire Department public information officer. By 11:25 a.m., the fire was contained.

Arson investigators are working to determine a cause of the fire, Stuehler said Wednesday afternoon.
