A student crossing Almond Avenue to Los Altos High School ended up in the hospital Wednesday morning with non-life-threatening injuries after a parent driving an SUV struck her while she was in the crosswalk at North Gordon Way, according to police. The accident occurred at approximately 9 a.m.

The 17-year-old girl sustained bumps, scratches and road rash, according to police spokesman Andy Galea. The driver, a 50-year-old Hayward man driving the 1999 Ford Expedition was dropping off a student at the high school, Galea said, and told police he did not see the student.

He was not cited at the scene, but Galea said the investigation is ongoing and he could be at a later date.

Cristy Dawson, assistant principal at Los Altos High School, told the Town Crier that the girl said, “Hi, Ms. Dawson,” as she left in the ambulance.

“That made me feel good,” Dawson said.

Dawson said the intersection tends to be “problematic” during the morning commute.

“I’d like the city to look at that and make it safer,” she said. “We have students driving as well as adults.”
