The Santa Clara County Avoid the 13 DUI task force will deploy additional patrols Thursday into communities including Los Altos Hills in an effort to lower deaths and injuries caused by drunk drivers.

Sheriff’s deputies will patrol city streets while the California Highway Patrol will be on freeways and in unincorporated communities around Los Altos looking for signs of a drunk driver, according to Sgt. Rick Sung, public information officer for the County Sheriff’s office.

Besides being a time to celebrate California’s rich history, Cinco de Mayo could also be a dangerous evening and night when someone chooses to drink and drive, Sung said.

Signs of a drunk driver include erratic driving such as weaving out of the lane, wide turns, aggressive and reckless driving and driving below the speed limit.

Sung urges everyone to plan ahead and arrange designated drivers or rides home for friends, family members or co-workers before the drinking begins. Report drunk drivers by calling 9-1-1.

The task force is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
