City council approves sign protections

Referring to First Amendment free-speech protections, the Los Altos City Council voted unanimously June 22 to approve amendments to the city’s sign ordinance that adopt a content-neutral approach.

New policies allow residents to place signs on their property with Constitution-protected, noncommercial messages. Signs relating to elections are now included in the definition. However, to maintain the city’s aesthetic standards, dimensions for residential signs are restricted to 12 square feet. Similar size limits for signs on commercial properties have yet to be determined.

Recent changes prohibit further erection of digital displays and billboards, commercial or otherwise.
