No plans to ban dayworkers in Los Altos

Although a federal ruling last week allows Redondo Beach officials to ban dayworkers from soliciting work on city streets, Los Altos has no plans to adopt a similar ordinance, according to Los Altos Police Chief Tuck Younis.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit voted 2-1 June 9 to overturn an existing Redondo Beach ordinance that allowed day laborers to ask motorists for work.

“Several months ago, the (Los Altos) city attorney and I brought an ordinance amendment to council for public safety reasons to make it illegal to solicit on roadway medians,” Younis said. “This could apply to dayworkers, but we haven’t experienced any problems or received any complaints. We feel the existing municipal code is sufficient.”

Younis said the only place in Los Altos where day laborers congregate is the corner of El Camino Real and Sherwood Avenue, near Los Altos’ border with Mountain View.
