Hit-and-run driver to be sentenced

Craig Borlik, a Los Altos resident who in May struck a cyclist and fled the scene with his 3-year-old son in tow, is scheduled to be sentenced at 1:30 p.m. March 3 in Santa Clara County Superior Court, San Jose. The cyclist, 72-year-old Robert James Beebe of Sunnyvale, died.

Borlik, 40, pleaded guilty Jan. 10 to charges of driving while intoxicated, causing great bodily injury to a person over the age of 70, felony child endangerment, vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and felony hit-and-run. In exchange, Judge Diane Northway capped the maximum sentence Borlik can receive at six years.

LAH cell tower obstacles, success

A temporary T-Mobile cell tower was installed on a city water tank on De Bell Road in December, but the future of a permanent tower is in question.

The facility relies on a privately owned access road, for which the cell-phone company had not acquired an easement.

The planning commission approved a Cingular application for a permanent 75-foot tree-style cell tower at Town Hall Thursday.

Cingular plans to install an emergency communications antenna free of charge on the tower.

LAH joins regional wireless effort

The city council has voted to support the planning stages of a regional wireless broadband network, allocating $2,500 to the project.

The Smart Valley task force of the Joint Venture Silicon Valley Network is soliciting funding from cities in Santa Clara County and neighboring counties.

The task force aims to solicit bids from vendors who could work with participating cities to create the network. The planned network would cover about 1,500 square miles and provide coverage in residential as well as commercial areas.
