A new fire engine rolled into Los Altos last month making its debut at the Loyola Fire Station on Fremont Avenue. The Loyola site was one of four stations in the Santa Clara County Fire District selected to receive a new engine this year.
The new Engine No. 16 replaces the station’s 12-year-old engine, which the county will use as a reserve at another district location. Fire officials said the former Engine No. 16 had accrued nearly 100,000 miles during its time at the station. The new fire engine carries up to 600 gallons of water and features a fully-enclosed cab and interior storage compartments with vertically sliding doors along the sides and back of the vehicle, including an enclosed compartment specifically designed to hold the ladder.
“More thought was put into (the design). There’s a ton of room on this,” said Tony Madieros, a firefighter and paramedic engineer at Loyola. “The medical equipment was scattered all over on the old one. There was no place for it to fit.”
Madieros said firefighters took the engine out on its first call last week to Loyola School after someone reported a trash fire.
The new engine is scheduled to be on display at the annual Los Altos Arts & Wine Festival July 8-9.
