Mountain View announces cause behind tree decline

The city of Mountain View removed more than 30 trees near the Mountain View Public Library and Pioneer Park in early July due to poor condition.

After laboratory testing, the city announced on Sept. 23 that this decline was caused by a previously used herbicide containing imazapyr.

According to the city of Mountain View’s press release on the matter, the city has stopped using imazapyr pesticides for weed control and is taking steps to rehabilitate the soil.

The city plans to replace the area’s trees once the soil is able to support long-term health, and will continue monitoring trees at other locations which may also have been damaged by pesticide use.

These other locations include Stevenson Park, Gateway Park, Castro Street roadway medians and Evelyn Avenue.
