Congratulations to Foothill College. A couple of weeks ago, Foothill College President Dr. Kristina Whalen announced that the college had received approval to offer a Bachelor of Science degree in Buildings Trades Management.
What’s that you say, “a community college giving out Bachelor of Science degrees?” That is supposed to be for the California State University and the University of California systems to offer. However, a number of years ago, community colleges were allowed to offer BS degrees if the CSUs and UCs didn’t offer those specific concentrations.
Foothill officials engaged 30 employers to help develop the degree, and won approval from the California Community College Board of Governors. There are about 2,000 active building trades apprentices being served by Foothill College. This degree will expand opportunities and promote economic mobility as well as workforce innovation. The first class of enrollees will be in 2028.
By the way, there are three other BS degrees offered by the Foothill-De Anza Community College District. Foothill College offers BS degrees in Dental Hygiene and Respiratory Care. De Anza College offers one in Automotive Technology Management.
We continue to be grateful to have such progressive and forward-thinking educators working for our community.
