Los Altos resident and St. Francis High graduate Nick Juran (Class of 2019) has received the University of Washington’s 2020-2021 Provost Award for football.
The award recognizes the highest-GPA on each of the university’s varsity sports teams. Juran’s 2020-21 GPA of 4.00 placed him at the top of the football team’s approximately 120 players for the past academic year.
A business major, Juran remained on campus in Seattle while many students moved home due to the COVID pandemic.
“The football team still had practices and workouts throughout the pandemic, even though our classes were all virtual,” Juran said. “I missed the classroom environment, but the online format actually gave me a lot of flexibility to work in my studies around the football commitments.”
Juran played safety for St. Francis, earning All-West Catholic Athletic League honors, and started out as a safety at Washington as well. In last fall’s COVID-shortened season, he received the Huskies’ Brian Stapp Special Teams Scout Squad MVP award.
Following the season, Juran switched to offense – specifically wide receiver.
“I had not played offense in a while,” he said, “but it has been a lot of fun to get into the receiver role.”
In Washington’s annual spring game, an intrasquad scrimmage with fans in attendance, he reeled in three passes for 29 yards, making him one of only three receivers with three or more catches. In addition, Juran played several drives on defense, making him the only Husky to play both offense and defense in the game.
After college, Juran plans to pursue a business career. He is participating in the Adobe Sales Academy internship program this summer. He was also selected as one of three student-athlete advisers for Invesco’s Financial Education program, which consists of current and former athletes, including Grant Hill (ex-NBA), Swin Cash (ex-WNBA) and Jaylon Smith (NFL).
