The fourth Poetry to Music contest is currently underway to find the right words to sing out from Schola Cantorum.

Following the theme of “Belonging: Finding your place in the world,” high school students from across Santa Clara County are invited to submit original works of poetry to be set to choral composition under the direction of Buddy James.

“Choral music is a potent vehicle to bring people together. I hope we inspire new ideas about choral repertoire and how to reach the community,” James said.

Contest submissions will be considered by a panel of judges including Santa Clara County Poet Laureate Yosimar Reyes. From the poems submitted, one will be selected and set to a choral composition in four parts by composer Maria Thompson Corley. The new composition will then debut on May 23, 2027, at Schola Cantorum’s concert, “The Poet Speaks, from Shakespeare to Tomorrow.” Awards will be presented to the top three poets: $600 for first place, $350 for second place and $250 for third place.
