Spring Sports Summary

he Mountain View High girls swimming and diving team remained undefeated in the SCVAL El Camino Division by routing host Wilcox 141-42 last Friday.

Spartans coach Ben Murray said the meet was sloppy – largely due to the confusion caused by the starter in several events – but his team still put up some impressive performances.

Sophomore Yen Lau qualified for the Central Coast Section finals in the 200 individual medley, freshman Jessica Howard-Anderson just missed the CCS cut in the 500 freestyle and junior Megan Wicklander set personal records in 50 and 100 free events.

The Mountain View boys, meanwhile, held on for a 90-81 victory over Wilcox.

The Spartans were paced by seniors Mike Tkalevic’s victories in the 200 individual medley and 100 breast stroke, plus Brian Rees’ near-CCS qualifying victories in the 50 free and 100 back. Sophomore Michael Kasper also helped the cause by finishing second in the 50 free and 100 breast, an event he swam fast enough to make CCS.

Mountain View split its El Camino Division meet at Cupertino last Thursday, with the boys losing 71-52 and the girls prevailing 71-49.

“We had an interesting day at Cupertino and had our closest meet to date on the girls side,” Spartans coach Sam Read said. “On the boys side, we had a number of top two finishers and double scorers. The boys feel a bit short, but they are coming into their own.”

The Mountain View boys were led by Trevor Hooper, who captured both the long jump (17-11 3/4) and triple jump (38-10 3/4).
