• Mission: Mentor Tutor Connection aims to help students in Mountain View and Los Altos public schools achieve their potential and thrive. MTC recruits, trains and supports community volunteers to be tutors and mentors who enhance students’ academic, social and emotional growth.
• 2021 update: MTC recently launched an interventional reading program with the Los Altos School District that matches tutors with students who are struggling to learn to read.
The six-week program provides a structured format for tutoring in which the tutor meets with students four days a week for 30-minute sessions.
The program relies on consistency and frequency to build a strong relationship between the tutor and student, according to MTC executive director Carol Olson.
The pandemic forced MTC to switch to remote tutoring, but that is changing. While the majority of elementary and middle school students are still being tutored online, the in-person option is opening up again.
Mentors continue to meet with high school students in person or virtually, following all COVID-19 safety protocols.
• Why the Holiday Fund is needed: Most of the money goes toward training and recruiting the nonprofit organization’s volunteers.
