When the Los Altos School District ended its pursuit last month of an 8.6-acre property at California Street and San Antonio Road in Mountain View, it cleared the way for city council approval of a massive 632-unit housing project in its place.
The Greystar development firm is proceeding with the multifamily housing complex, which also will include 20,000 square feet of commercial space, after getting the go-ahead from the council June 26.
The proposed project would feature four buildings between three and five stories each, the addition of new private streets, more than 900 new parking spaces and nearly an acre of publicly accessible open space at the center of the complex. The location, at 2580 and 2590 California Street and 201 San Antonio Circle, was previously occupied by a Safeway supermarket and the Old Mill office complex. According to current plans, the tallest structure would top off at approximately 65 feet.
The commercial space will comprise possible retail and restaurants on the ground floors, including space earmarked for housing the offices of a nonprofit group.
To satisfy the city’s 3.8-acre park requirement, Greystar has agreed to purchase 2 acres at the Los Altos School District’s newly targeted 9.65-acre school site at Showers Drive and California Street to go toward open space, and plans to fulfill the remaining 1.8-acre requirement by paying an in-lieu fee. The partnership between the school district and the city of Mountain View enables them to share approximately 6 acres of open space/parkland at the district’s new site.
Although council members applauded the developer for its open-space purchase, they expressed concerns over the proposed removal of 218 of the site’s 240 existing trees, including 78 of the 94 heritage trees. Council members urged Greystar to preserve as many trees as possible.
According to Greystar representative Dan Deibel, project construction could begin in approximately a year and take four years to complete.
The project is expected to bring 30-150 new students to the Los Altos School District, said Randy Kenyon, assistant superintendent for business services. Citing the most recent demographic information, Kenyon added that a 580-unit apartment complex currently under construction at 400 San Antonio Road is expected to generate another 30-130 students.Business NewsMassive mixed-use MV development begins to take shapeRendering Courtesy of Greystar A four- and five-story housing and commercial development planned for Mountain View’s San Antonio neighborhood received the go-ahead from local government last month.
