The second Los Altos Live Well Age Well Health Expo is set for noon to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, at the Los Altos Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave. The free event will emphasize healthy living and aging, according to organizers.
Sponsors include the Los Altos/Los Altos Hills Senior Commission, Los Altos Community Services Adult 50+ Program and Los Altos Hills Community Services.
Last year’s event, which focused on preventing dementia and cognitive decline, drew 250-300 attendees, according to Senior Commission staff liaison and expo organizer Jaime Chew.
“The first year went extremely well. We learned a lot, and that informed some of this year’s changes, like simplified presentations and more vendors,” Chew said. “I’m most excited to provide this opportunity for the community to get helpful information and to be able to connect with resources that can make a real change in their lives.”
Chew expects similar attendance at this year’s event, which will highlight healthy aging. She said the theme was inspired by Los Altos’ role as a member of the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities.
“Our mission is to connect the community with information and resources. We want to equip them with knowledge of what to do in certain scenarios, whether they’ve had a fall, or their mobility has changed, or they’re a caregiver of someone experiencing that,” she said. “Often, people don’t know they need that information until they are given it.”
To that end, the expo will host vendors and representatives from nonprofit organizations. Chew said they will offer information and resources that can benefit the aging community in a wide range of topics, such as social activities, emergency preparedness and navigating technology.
Los Altos-based Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District will be among those with a table at the expo. The organization’s mission is to preserve open space and protect its ecosystems, while providing the public with environmentally friendly opportunities to connect with nature.
“Events like the Live Well Age Well Health Expo are a valuable opportunity to connect older adults with organizations, programs and resources that can support their health and well-being,” Midpen Public Affairs Specialist Eleanor Raab said. “This event gives us the opportunity to share information about the myriad ways people can enjoy the outdoors and learn about the open spaces in their community … face-to-face.”
The event will also feature two live presentations; Los Altos Hills Mayor Rajiv Bhateja will educate the scam-vulnerable adult population on how to avoid scams in the age of AI; and physician Dr. Mehrdad Ayati will discuss how to age healthily at home.
Chew said the expo “can be a resource to so many,” and she encourages people to attend.
“People can just come and get the information (free of charge), which is absolutely wonderful,” she said. “You don’t really realize the resource’s benefits until you physically see it, and then it becomes part of your world.”
