The Los Altos Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution invites community members to attend a free talk by Dr. Amy Noel Ellison, curator and director of exhibitions at the Los Altos History Museum noon Friday, March 20 at the Los Altos Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos.

Ellison will speak on the “Journey of the Declaration of Independence: From 1776 through today.”

The talk is part of the Los Altos Chapter, DAR’s celebration of America’s semiquincentennial, marking the anniversary of the July 4, 1776, Declaration of Independence. Ellison’s talk will explore the Declaration of Independence’s long history and continued relevance to American society today. As a guest curator and consulting historian for the Museum of the American Revolution’s blockbuster exhibit, “The Declaration’s Journey” (open through 2026 in Philadelphia), Ellison researched the role the Declaration has played in independence and rights movements within the U.S. and around the world. A living document, interpretations of its famous words have changed over time and hold continued relevance for us today. Ellison earned her Ph.D. in history from Boston University and has held curatorial and research positions at the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Museum of Art as well as the Los Altos History Museum.

The nation’s 250th anniversary presents an opportunity to reflect upon the Declaration’s ideals and how we can better ensure its promises of freedom and equality for all. The Los Altos History Museum will commemorate America’s semiquincentennial with an exhibit opening in mid-June, “America’s 250th.” The Los Altos History Museum explores the rich history of local people, and how the use of the land over time has transformed the agricultural paradise once known as the “Valley of Heart’s Delight” into the high technology hub of today’s Silicon Valley. The museum’s mission is to preserve and share local history to enrich our community and shape a more informed future, and provides educational opportunities for children and adults to learn about the community.
