In almost all metrics, Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District and Los Altos School District exceed state data on academic performance, graduation rates and absenteeism.
Last week, state education officials released the 2025 School Dashboard, an annual report tracking student assessment data and other success metrics. Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District and Los Altos School District received top marks, or a blue color-coded score indicator, for being above the state standard in English and Language Arts as well as mathematics testing.
“Seeing modest improvement on every dashboard indicator should encourage us to deepen our investments in every child’s progress,” said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond. “We can see that strategies like community schools and literacy coaches are making a positive impact for the whole child.”
Statewide, educators noted modest gains in almost all areas. For the first time, all indicators were at least “yellow” or “green,” reflecting that all key student outcomes are showing improvement. Colors on the dashboard are based on both status and progress since the previous year.
The metrics are measured on a color-coded system, from red (lowest) to blue (highest). The assessment data is based on student performance on state assessment tests, which are taken annually by students in grades 3 through 8 and grade 11.
California’s graduation rate is at its highest since the launch of the California School Dashboard in 2017; 87.5 percent, up 4.5 percentage points since then. Mountain View-Los Altos School District has a graduation rate of 94.8%.
College and career readiness has increased by 3.1 percentage points statewide, with 51.7% of graduates statewide who were prepared for college and career by their high school graduation. Mountain View-Los Altos School District has a college and career readiness rate of 77.2%, with a blue color indicator.
The rate of chronic absenteeism for TK through 8 students continues to improve in the statewide rate with 17.1%. At the Los Altos School District, the level was 5.4%, with a green indicator.
Across the county, Santa Clara County students are outperforming students statewide in English Language arts, math and science.
In 2025, 59.8% of students in the county met or exceeded standard ELA, 53.2% met or exceeded the standard in math and 47.6% of Santa Clara County students met or exceeded the standard in science.
The chronic absentee rate in Santa Clara County is at 15.3% compared to the state’s 19.4% rate.
“This progress is remarkable. We should all be proud of the work that goes into ensuring every student is making progress in their academic goals,” said Dr. David M. Toston, Sr. County Superintendent of Schools. “However, there is still plenty of work we all need to do to ensure students are successful in and out of school.”
