Speak up for democracy

I’m 71 years old so I’ve lived through many political crises in this country – but I have never seen an attack on our democracy like this. In the past, there was bipartisan opposition to lawlessness. Today, the guardrails are being dismantled before our eyes, and we must sound the alarm. The systematic chipping away at our freedoms is real and appears to be unstoppable as Congress is letting us down by cowering to Trump’s power, especially the Republicans. Keep your eyes open and speak up.

Who is the real culprit?

Isn’t it interesting that the Los Altos/Mt. View School District does not come to the table to discuss a solution to the parking problem around Los Altos High School?

The problem we have was caused by the LAHS School District.

In the 1980s the school district had three high schools – Mt. View, Los Altos and Awalt. The district forecast shrinking enrollment and chose to close Mt. View High School, which was then located on Castro St. Their enrollment has increased to the present day.

It takes a lot of nerve to cause the problem and then not participate with their neighbors to attempt to solve the problem. There is a solution the school district can implement, but I would bet it will never happen.

What happens when a high school student lives so far from their high school that getting to school and back becomes problematic? The answer is that the school district provides a school bus. The bus picks up the students at a bus stop, takes them to school and returns them to the bus stop. This is not a city of Los Altos problem. I say if the school district does not want to discuss a solution with the city, then the city should not discuss this anymore. Eventually the school district will be forced take their head out of the sand and solve the problem.

Plums should be harvested

The plum trees on San Antonio are certainly beautiful when in bloom, but would be much more beautiful if the city had a plan for harvesting the fruit. Every year the sidewalk underneath them becomes a sticky mess that turns a short walk to local businesses into a chore. The waste of all that fruit is also disappointing.
