Spring is in the air, and that means it’s time for one of Los Altos’ most cherished traditions – the 78th annual Kiwanis Pet Parade. Mark your calendars for 10 a.m. May 17 in downtown Los Altos, and join the celebration of community, creativity and, of course, pets of all shapes and sizes.

Since 1947, the Los Altos Kiwanis Pet Parade has been a beloved event that brings together families, schools and neighbors to celebrate spring. What began as a small community gathering has grown into a vibrant tradition that showcases the unique spirit of Los Altos.

From the Old Town Band leading the parade to the enthusiastic participation of local schools and organizations, the pet parade is a testament to the creativity and camaraderie of our town.

The pet parade is a feast for the eyes and a delight for the heart. Children and adults  proudly showcase their pets, dressed in everything from superhero capes to tutus. While dogs are the most common participants, you’ll see just about every kind of pet imaginable – iguanas, rabbits, snakes, chickens and even goldfish in little red wagons. It’s a joyful reminder of the special bond between people and their pets.

The parade wouldn’t be complete without the energetic involvement of local schools, both public and private. Students march together, often in themed costumes or with decorated floats, adding to the festive atmosphere. The Old Town Band sets the tone with lively music, and other local bands and performers keep the energy high throughout the event.

Whether a longtime resident or new to Los Altos, the Pet Parade is an event for everyone. It’s a chance to connect with neighbors, cheer on the creative costumes and celebrate spring. Bring your family, bring your pets and enjoy a morning of fun, laughter and community spirit.

How to participate

• For pet owners: Dress up your pet (or yourself) and join the parade. All pets are welcome, big or small, furry or scaly.

• For spectators: Grab a spot along the parade route and enjoy the show. Don’t forget your camera – you’ll want to capture the smiles and surprises.

• For schools and groups: March together and show off your school or organization pride.

Registration for parade participation opened March 1.
