Floral designer Coni Oakson appeared at the Garden Club of Los Altos meeting Oct. 24, demonstrating how to use sustainable, reusable and recyclable elements when making floral arrangements.
Oakson showed the use of cane seating material or “holey” placemats loosely folded into a cone shape for the structural element of an arrangement. She also demonstrated making a largely dried floral arrangement, adding fresh flowers in individual tubes of water and then just replacing the fresh flowers when they wilt to extend the life of the arrangement.
She also showed how she brings in a shallow, narrow wooden box filled with succulents – that usually lives outside – to use as a tablescape with either autumn-inspired additions or for Christmas, with ornaments, glittery picks and some pinecones.
Oakson donated the many arrangements for the club’s door prize raffle.
The “October Tea” meeting also honored new members. Members brought their favorite sweet or savory finger food for all to share.
The next meeting of the Garden Club of Los Altos is scheduled 12:30 p.m. Jan. 23 at Los Altos Lutheran Church, 460 S. El Monte.
