Los Altos resident Joyce Imprescia has donated her time, talents and energy to many groups and schools throughout her life, but it was her hobby of going to estate and garage sales that connected her with her current volunteer position at the American Cancer Society Discovery Shop in downtown Los Altos.
As Estate Donations Services Volunteer, Imprescia’s work has increased donations to the store. Her contribution concept, along with dedicated volunteers and the continued support of donors, helped make the Los Altos Discovery Store the No. 1 income earner in May among the 40 California American Cancer Society stores.
Q: How did you come up with this idea for a new source of donations?
A: I was already seeking estate liquidations for the Assistance League Costume Bank, and I realized the Discovery Shop could also benefit from the donations I was collecting. I try to get the word out to family, friends, estate-sale companies and the real estate community about our needs. I make it easy for people to donate by offering to pack up and pick up large donations.
Q: Do you also volunteer at the store?
A: In addition to seeking additional donations, I volunteer for one shift a week and love the gals I work with at the shop. It is a cheerful, upbeat atmosphere and a worthwhile use of my time.
Q: What are the requirements for a volunteer at the Discovery Shop?
A: Volunteers are asked to commit to one shift a week, 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. or 1:30-5 p.m., but we are flexible for vacations and appointments. All ages, from high schoolers to octogenarians, may volunteer. The jobs vary from working the cash register and sprucing up donations to pricing and arranging items for sale.
Q: What type of person might enjoy this volunteer job?
A: Anyone with a passion for our mission of raising money for the fight against cancer, an interest in learning a new skill and an interest in developing new friendships would fit right in.
Q: What have you gained from all your volunteer experiences?
A: Fulfillment, enjoyment and a fabulous new network of friends.
Q: Why would you encourage others to volunteer?
A: Because there so many organizations in need of our assistance, and it is rewarding knowing you are contributing to the community. I see many people who want to help but do not know how. Just find a place that interests you and go out and offer your time and talents. Everyone should and can be productive and connected.
