TheatreWorks’ world premiere of the musical “Emma” has been extended through Sunday at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, 500 Castro St.
Created by Tony-nominated composer Paul Gordon (“Jane Eyre”), “Emma” is directed by Robert Kelley, TheatreWorks’ founding artistic director.
TheatreWorks’ 50th world premiere, “Emma” was developed in 2006 as part of the company’s New Works Initiative. It is based on the classic novel by Jane Austen.
Endowed with wealth, good looks, and prestige, 19th-century ingénue Emma Woodhouse prides herself on her matchmaking skills. Having engineered one successful marriage, she turns her attention toward making a match for her new protégé.
Despite her obsession with romance, Emma is clueless to her own feelings, and her well-intentioned efforts often misfire, leading to a whirlwind of comic complications and, of course, true love.
The TheatreWorks production stars veteran Lianne Marie Dobbs (“A Little Princess,” “Merrily We Roll Along”) as Emma. Broadway actor Timothy Gulan (“The Frogs,” “The Lion King”) plays the dashing Mr. Knightly.
The cast also features Brian Herndon (as Mr. Elton) and Dani Marcus (Harriet), both of whom have performed with TheatreWorks in the past. George Ward, Suzanne Grodner, Travis Poelle, Richard Frederick, Danielle Levin, Mindy Lym, Sean Patrick Murtagh and Nick Nakashima round out the cast.
Performances of “Emma” are scheduled 7:30 p.m. today; 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday; 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday; and 2 p.m. Sunday.
Tickets are $25-$61.
