FabMo, the local creative reuse nonprofit, has scheduled its second artisan market 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 6) in the Grand Oak Room and adjacent courtyard at the Los Altos Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave.

The popularity of last year’s market prompted extended hours for the sustainable shopping event, which will spotlight the work of nearly 40 local makers offering unique, handcrafted fine art, fashion accessories, home decor, jewelry, toys, gifts and holiday items. All of the items sold will be crafted from the approximately 70 tons of new but discarded designer materials FabMo diverts from the landfill each year.

The show attracts eco-conscious artisans from around the Bay Area, including three this year who hail from from Los Altos.

In addition to the artisanal wares, a curated collection of vintage linens and other curios will be sold to benefit FabMo’s programs and a food truck will be onsite.

The event is designed to highlight FabMo’s mission to reduce textile waste and inspire creative reuse by showcasing the potential of the upcycled bounty while simultaneously supporting and promoting the artisan community whose purchases, donations and volunteerism keep the nonprofit running.

Founded in the Palo Alto home of Hannah and Jonathan Cranch in 2008, FabMo moved to larger commercial spaces in Mountain View and eventually Sunnyvale. By working with the San Francisco Design Center and private donors, the volunteer-run organization rescues an estimated 14,000 pounds of materials each year, much of it high-end fabric remnants including silk, brocade and fine linen; leather swatches; glass and marble tile; wallpaper; and wood. The materials are made available to the public through twice-monthly events at FabMo’s Sunnyvale warehouse and through its online store. In addition to the artisan community, educators, scrapbookers, parents and a host of other local nonprofits use FabMo’s materials.
